 GREAT TRAVEL LINKS: A huge benefit to the area is its great well-serviced motorways which connect to the whole of Spain and make driving to the UK, France and the rest of Europe very simple. It is also serviced by three international airports, Alicante, Murcia and Almeria all of which offer flights from the big budget carriers such as EasyJet, Ryan Air and BMI. Average flight time to the UK is just 2hrs 30minutes so it’s easy to see why thousands of British expats choose to live their dream along this stretch of the Mediterranean. |
Zurgena A sleepy rural village just 25 minutes inland from the coast. Whitewashed houses and cobbled walkways lead up from the main street and offer a real slice of how things used to be. Its local shops, great bars and friendly population have made it a popular settlement for a great expat community. |
Tijola A real gem of a Spanish village. Mounted on the side of lush green hills here you will find everything from the modern townhouse to a real rural estate. Relatively undiscovered by the expat community, it’s popularity is now beginning to grow. A village as you would imagine a real Spanish village to look - yet just a short distance from the historic city of Granada and the beautiful Negratin lake. |
Chirivel An old Roman town where life has slowed to a snail’s pace. Visitors always relax after half an hour sitting outside one of its many bodega/restaurants and are surprised by it non-traditional wide streets. The open air laundry has just been reformed and is still in regular use by the locals who use it as a meeting place. Popular with Spaniards from Granada many of whom have holiday homes here, its charm never fails to captivate. |
Mojacar The sun and beach lovers' paradise. Long a holiday destination popular with the Spanish it has only really been discovered in the last few years. Its close proximity to Almeria airport has opened it up to the holiday market - however don't fret as high rise development is strictly no-go. Overlooked by the old pueblo which dates back to Moorish times the beach (or playa) extends for 17km providing wonderful white sands, warm blue sea, fantastic beach bars and top-notch seafood/paella restaurants. |
Murcia A thriving metropolis teeming with life, wonderful architecture and culture. Offering a real slice of traditional Spanish life but with all mod cons, up-market bars, markets, huge retail parks and round the clock entertainment. Minutes away from the stunning Mar Menor and perhaps Spain’s most famous resort La Manga the location not only offers fantastic beaches, top golf courses and first class apartment developments but also still has numerous smaller towns where life is a whole lot sleepier. |
Garrucha A working port/fishing town with a very Spanish feel. Villa properties are not common here with locals favouring apartments and townhouses but what it lacks in real character properties it more than makes up for with its numerous great seafood restaurants where diners can still enjoy great fish fresh off of the boat. A huge weekend market boosts its popularity and its annual fiesta is not for the faint-hearted. |
Arboleas A small but very pretty and popular town with a strong agricultural economy. Surrounded by citrus orchards and olive groves the surrounding scenery provides year-round pleasure. Its bustling Saturday market attract visitors from miles around who flock in to sample the great local produce whilst catching up with friends over a cerveza or two. |
Almería Another beautiful city which oozes charm. Take a coffee in one of the many pavement cafes whilst life whizzes by. Wander around one of the many old plazas which haven’t changed much in 100 years. Of course there’s the much-used Centro Commercial (great for shopping) but there is so much more to this fantastic place. Wonderful fountains, balmy tree lined avenues, historic restaurants which have been serving up excellent wine and seafood for years, packed evening bars playing traditional Spanish music. You can even catch a ferry to Morocco. |
Velez-Rubio Just off of the main Granada motorway and with a breathtaking mountain backdrop lies this large but extremely pretty town which grew out of the almond oil industry. Its quaint streets belie the fact that all requirements for modern living are catered for and its large weekly market is a real communal get together. The surrounding hamlets play host to a number of large estate style properties with vast almond groves. |
